The 38th Rakow Commission will be unveiled with a hybrid presentation in the Museum auditorium and galleries. Te Rōngō Kirkwood's multi-disciplinary practices draws on her Scottish, English, and Māori heritage. This year's commission, The seer, the seen, the seeing, represents Kirkwood's most personal project to date. Kirkwood activates the material of glass as it is woven and worn by the wearer as a protective cloak, or kakahu. During a live artist talk and conversation with curator Tami Landis, Kirkwood will speak to this work and this distinct moment in her career.
The event will also include the premiere of a short documentary video about the creation of the 38th Rakow Commission.
This event is free and open to the public. No registration is needed to attend the lecture in person at the Museum; registration is required for guests participating virtually.
