Workshop Description:
This workshop provides a practical overview of confidentiality in behavioral health practice, with focused attention on HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and related legal and ethical standards. Participants will examine how confidentiality applies to clinical records, substance use treatment information, coordination of care, and safety-related disclosures. The training is designed to help professionals strengthen their understanding of privacy protections while making sound and compliant decisions in everyday practice.
Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the basic principles of confidentiality, including the roles of HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 in behavioral health settings.
- Identify when client information may be disclosed, when written consent is required, and when disclosure is restricted or prohibited.
- Apply confidentiality standards to common practice situations involving records requests, substance use treatment information, coordination of care, and exceptions related to safety or law.
