Join us for this historical conference examining the great Cathal Brugha, as we approach the 150th anniversary of his birth (18 July 1874).
About this Event

The Military Archives, Military History Society of Ireland, and historians Gerard Shannon and Liz Gillis, have organised a one-day historical conference examining the many aspects of the great Cathal Brugha at the barracks which bears his name.


The conference will take place on Saturday 27 April, beginning at 10:15am, in the Brigade Auditorium, Cathal Brugha Barracks. As seating is limited, booking in advance is required.


ID will be required at barrack gate.


CONFERENCE PROGRAMME


10:15: Arrival, tea and coffee.


11:00 - 11:30: Opening remarks by Brig Gen (retd) Tony Cudmore, President of the Military History Society of Ireland.


11:40 - 13:00: Session One – Legacy and Early activism

· Do chum glóire Dé agus onóra na hÉireann: Brugha in Memory and Commemoration by Dr Caitlin White (TCD).

· A deep commitment to Irish language and culture: Cathal Brugha and the Gaelic League by Dr Mary MacDiarmada (DCU).

· Cathal Brugha, the 4th Battalion and the 1916 Rising by Liz Gillis (Independent Scholar).

· Ten minutes Q & A.


13:00 - 14:00: Break for lunch.


14:00-15:20: Session Two – Through Revolution and Truce

· ‘The chances of any of the party of Volunteers surviving subsequent to those executions would be one in a million': Cathal Brugha's plan to assassinate the British Cabinet by Fergus O’Farrell (Independent Scholar).

· Duty, conspiracy and enmity: Cathal Brugha as minister for defence, 1919-22 by Dr Daithí Ó’Corrain (DCU) and Dr Gerard Hanley (DCU).
