Come join us at the SMC Barrett Gallery for student-led tours of the Concrete Hope Exhibit (a collaborative effort from the classes of Art 80, 82, and 84)! We will engage the community in intentional discussions about art, explore different pieces of the exhibit, and reflect on their creative impacts. The goal is to demystify the visual language that artists often use to speak to their audience. All are welcome to these discussions, and all questions are the right questions! | ¡Únete a nosotros en la Galería SMC Barrett para realizar recorridos dirigidos por estudiantes por la Exposición Esperanza Concreta (un esfuerzo colaborativo de las clases de Arte 80, 82 y 84)! Involucraremos a la comunidad en debates intencionales sobre arte, exploraremos diferentes piezas de la exhibición y reflexionaremos sobre sus impactos creativos. El objetivo es desmitificar el lenguaje visual que los artistas utilizan para hablar con el público. ¡Todos son bienvenidos a estas discusiones y todas las preguntas son las correctas!

Concrete Hope foregrounds the multiplicity of Brown identity in Southern California, encompassing Mexican American, Chicanx, Indigenous, Mestiza, Afro Mexicana, immigrant, undoc+, Oaxaqueñe, Yaqui, Migrant, Guatemalan Mexican, Salvadoran, Mexipino (Mexican Filipino), Chapin, and Jaxican (Japanese Mexican), et al. as a mode of cultural self-affirmation. Bringing together thirty-eight emergent photographers and lens-based artists, the exhibition examines how media based photography, articulates the layered narratives and lived experiences of this complex community. | Esperanza Concreta pone en primer plano la multiplicidad de la identidad marrón en el sur de California, abarcando a los mexicoamericanos, chicanx, indígenas, mestizos, afromexicanos, inmigrantes, undoc+, oaxaqueños, yaquis, migrantes, guatemaltecos, mexicanos salvadoreños, mexipinos (mexicanos filipinos), chapines, y jaxicanos (japoneses mexicanos), etc. como un modo de autoafirmación cultural. La exposición, que reúne a treinta y ocho fotógrafos emergentes y artistas basados en cámaras, examinaremos cómo la fotografía basada en medios articula las narrativas en capas y las experiencias vividas de esta compleja comunidad.
