International Women’s Day
On the eve of International Women’s Day, on March 5, the Russian House in Brussels will host a special evening — a musical tribute to Woman, her inspiration, strength, and the poetry of feelings.
A vibrant European duo will perform on stage — Johan Famaey (piano, composer) and Marina Martin Maldonado (violin). Their program is a musical journey connecting Belgium, Spain, and Russia, where classical tradition meets modernity and virtuosity meets deep emotional expression.
The musicians are known across Europe for their atmospheric concerts combining original masterpieces and unique arrangements. The duo regularly presents its work on chamber stages and prestigious venues. One of their notable performances was the piece Time Passenger at the Palau de la Música Catalana with an orchestra conducted by Xavier Puig.
The program will feature works from different cultures and eras: from classical tradition to Spanish rhythms and tango — a living story about feelings, memory, and dreams. Special attention is given to female images as symbols of beauty, strength, and inspiration, from the mythical nymph to the modern muse.
International Women’s Day emerged in the early 20th century as a day of women’s struggle for their rights. The idea of an annual celebration was proposed by German activist Clara Zetkin at the International Socialist Women’s Conference in 1910. In 1917, a women’s demonstration in Petrograd on March 8 became one of the events preceding revolutionary changes, after which the date became fixed in the calendar.
In Russia the holiday gradually acquired a special warm meaning. Today it is less a political date and more a day of gratitude and attention — mothers, grandmothers, daughters, colleagues, and teachers are congratulated, flowers are given, and concerts are organized. March 8 has become a symbol of respect, beauty, care, and recognition of women’s role in family, culture, and society.
