“What beauty has thou found?...Music from heaven….” The words of Poet Laureate Robert Bridges bring inspiration to Reading Bach Choir’s programme of English part songs. Gerald Finzi’s Seven Poems of Robert Bridges feature alongside works by those who knew, inspired, or were inspired by him. Thus, there are songs by Ernest Bristow Farrar, Finzi’s teacher, Stanford, and his friend, Frank Bridge.
Finzi studied with Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams and their The evening-watch and Valiant for Truth, along with Parry’s My soul, there is a country from Songs of Farewell are emblematic of the time. Equally memorable will be the Hymn to St. Cecilia which marries the poetry of Auden with Benjamin Britten’s magnificent music.
