Joseph Pehrson, August 14, 1950 - April 3, 2020.

Originally from Detroit, Joe started piano lessons at age nine. His mother, Virginia Pehrson, played piano and had several compositions published. Both parents encouraged and supported his fascination with music. After discovering composition at age thirteen, Joe was hooked! He studied at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan (Doctor of Musical Arts, 1981). His teachers included composers Leslie Bassett, Joseph Schwantner, and, informally, Otto Luening and Elie Siegmeister in New York.

Joe's many chamber and orchestral compositions have been performed at numerous venues, including Merkin Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Symphony Space, The DiMenna Center, NYU, Greenwich House, Columbia University, William Paterson University, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, University of Akron, University of Chicago, University of Colorado, and throughout the United States, Eastern Europe, and Russia. In the mid-1990s, he helped start the magazine New Music Connoisseur, for which he wrote many reviews. In the 2000s, several of his works were also presented by The New York Composers' Circle, The International Street Cannibals, Composers Collaborative Inc., and Vox Novus 60x60, among others.

He also created dozens of electronic and microtonal compositions. Joe's exploration of alternate tunings led to multiple performances on the The American Festival of Microtonal Music, as well as lectures and demonstrations at conservatories in the United States and in Russia, including the Moscow Conservatory.

In 2010, Joe co-founded the label Composers Concordance Records (CCR), with distribution by Naxos. His compositions have also been recorded on Capstone and New Ariel Recordings, and several pieces are published by Seesaw Music, Corp., a division of Subito Music. Most recently, Joe's composition entitled 'Consideration' was premiered by CompCord Ensemble at Kostabi World Uptown in January 2020.

Joe will be remembered for his immense talent, his enthusiastic and warm personality, and his tireless efforts on behalf of his colleagues, bringing composers together for literally hundreds of concert events in NYC. Together with Founding Director Patrick Hardish, Joe conceived of Composers Concordance's overriding vision to promote contemporary music, composers, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. With his diligence, keen insight, and steadfast presence, he succeeded in helping to make that vision a reality.

He is survived by Linda Past-Pehrson, his devoted wife of nearly 40 years, who has choreographed and danced to many of Joe's compositions and also led numerous interviews on Composers Concordance concerts.

About Composers Concordance

Staying in rotation for 36 years in NYC is a rare feat. In the case of a new music presenting organization, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past but also an ethic of keeping one's ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance, founded in 1984 by Joseph Pehrson and Patrick Hardish, advised by Otto Luening, strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs and lead the CompCord Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Big Band. Associate Directors are Milica Paranosic, Peter Jarvis, Debra Kaye, and Seth Boustead. Composers Concordance has also created a Naxos-distributed record label: Composers Concordance Records, co-directed by Peter Jarvis. Composers Concordance's overriding vision is to promote contemporary music, composers, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music performed and recorded well, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition.

"The Composers Concordance folks are unpredictable and at times refreshingly irreverent in a reverent sort of way....ingenious fun" - Classical-Modern Music Review

"An unwavering force in giving composers exposure through concert bookings and its own record label, the intrepid new-music organization Composers Concordance” - The Brooklyn Rail

“Enterprising new music organization” - The New York Times

Due to the ongoing nature of necessary public health actions, Composers Concordance is continually monitoring the situation. If any of these concerts need to be cancelled or rescheduled, we will let you know immediately.
