What does a successful Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) look like?
About this Event

What does a successful Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) look like? What are the challenges - and effective solutions - for operating, monitoring, recruiting and publicising  a CTS?

Are you involved in the running of a community toilet scheme? Join us at this workshop for council officers and others involved in CTS planning and management, to share your experiences and hear from others. What advice would you give? What could work better?

Are you considering starting a scheme in your local area? We also welcome those hoping to develop a CTS, to air concerns and learn what works.

About the workshop

This one-off workshop is designed to share knowledge between professionals, whilst collecting insights for new CTS guidance for London, based on the experiences of those who run the schemes. This guidance - created by the Royal College of Art and Age UK London - will be freely available in 2026, and feature contributions from the workshop. Participant contributions will be anonymised unless participants prefer to be named.

As an inclusive design research centre, HHCD is committed to making our events inclusive, engaging and relaxed. Everyone will be able to contribute, through a series of facilitated discussions and activities to capture practical knowledge, past experiences, challenges and ideas. The workshop will last three hours, with regular breaks for refreshments (provided). HHCD has step-free access and accessible toilets, with a range of spaces to adjust for sensory needs. Please let us know when registering if you have any concerns. We will be in touch after registration to capture accessibility and dietary requirements.

About the wider project

The CTS workshop is part of The Places we Go, a research project at The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, in partnership with Age UK London. HHCD is an inclusive design research centre at the Royal College of Art with a long history of research projects about the design of public toilets, as a space and public service. Age UK London is supporting the project as part of their London Loos campaign - a call for better public toilet provision in the capital.
