About this Event

Community Shelf Book Club

Get ready for a shared journey!

We’re thrilled to launch this new community adventure, generously sponsored by the SD Public Library.

Our inaugural season is built around the powerful and celebrated book, We Are Each Other's Harvest by Natalie Baszile. This is a profound exploration of Black farming, family, heritage, and resilience in America; a story that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. We will meet the last Thursday of each month through to May.

This is a collective conversation. We've designed a dynamic experience with five themed gatherings (we call them Checkpoints), each offering a fresh lens through which to discuss the book. We'll move beyond standard discussion to dig into history, art, legacy, and what it all means for us right here, right now.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Checkpoint 1: Welcome & Foundations - January 29th

Let’s get to know each other! We’ll share our hopes for the club and begin our discussion with guided prompts. Sponsored by SD Public Library with complimentary books & catering!

Checkpoint 2: Historic Roots - February 26th

We’ll focus on essays about Emancipation and the early 20th century, uncovering the deep historical soil from which today's stories grow.

Checkpoint 3: Land, Labor & Legacy - March 26th

A deep dive into farming, land ownership, and displacement with a relevant film to spark discussion.

Checkpoint 4: Art & Memory - April 30th

We’ll slow down to appreciate the photographs, poems, and intimate personal narratives that give this book its soulful texture.

Checkpoint 5: Synthesis & Local Reflection - May 28th

We’ll bring it all together, connecting the book's themes to our own community. We’ll be joined by a special local voice (a historian, elder, or scholar) to help ground our conversation in local context. Contact: [email protected] if you have a suggested guest speaker.

Each participate will recieve a complimentary copy of We Are Each Other's Harvest by Natalie Baszile.
