“Dabo-fication of Everyday Life - Star Trek, Prediction Markets, and the Game of Life in an Uncertain Future”
Featuring: Dr. Florence M. Chee, Director for the Center for Digital Ethics and Policy at Loyola University
If prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket sounded familiar, there's a reason for that: the Dabo tables at Quark's bar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine became a ubiquitous part of everyday space station life, designed for 24/7 engagement. We live in a strange timeline where current betting apps beg for constant attention, and any event can be turned into a wager instantly. In a world of endless commodification, rigged markets, and social betting, we really are heading toward the Ferengi vision of "profit at all costs."
In this talk, Dr. Florence Chee will examine prediction markets through a historical (and science fiction lens) and what they bring to bear in the current social and political climate in which we find ourselves. An avid gamer and scholar of game culture, she lends a historical view to the evolution of gaming, their technological affordances, and the future of our imagined co-prosperity that includes the most vulnerable communities.
Dr. Florence M. Chee serves as Associate Professor of Digital Communication at Loyola University Chicago and is a leading technocultural ethicist. She serves as the Director of the Center for Digital Ethics and Policy (CDEP) and founded the Social & Interactive Media Lab (SIMLab) Chicago. Her work examines the social and ethical dimensions of digital lifestyles, specifically focusing on artificial intelligence, video games, and social media.
Format: 20-minute presentation, followed by a community conversation
