As Remembrance Day approaches, we invite you to join us for a special talk on the vital and poignant work carried out by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Pat Burgess, a dedicated volunteer from the CWGC, will share the history and ongoing efforts of the Commission in caring for the final resting places of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women around the world.Anyone who has visited a Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery will know the profound sense of reverence that such a visit can inspire. The beautifully maintained cemeteries and memorials reflect the deep respect we hold for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. The CWGC manages 23,000 war memorials and cemeteries globally, commemorating 1.7 million Commonwealth casualties. This includes the creation of distinctive Portland stone headstones, the preservation of historical monuments, and the meticulous horticultural work to maintain the grounds.
During this engaging talk, Pat will delve into the history of the CWGC and provide insight into the work volunteers like her do to ensure the ongoing care and upkeep of these hallowed sites, no matter where they may be in the world.
Tickets: £5 per person.
(Additional opportunity to make a donation to support the CWGC’s important work.)
