About this Event

Join us for a deep dive into the first year of Led Zeppelin, as Richard Morton Jack discusses his huge new book with the celebrated journalist Chris Welch, who was there from the start...

About The Only Way to Fly:

The product of years of research, this enormous book contains the most detailed and accurate account yet of the pathway to Led Zeppelin’s formation and the events of their tumultuous first year.

Alongside it is a wealth of rare material concerning the members’ earlier careers, and reproductions of virtually every piece of press they received between getting together in August 1968 and the release of Led Zeppelin II in October 1969.

Bulging with barely seen archival information and imagery, and featuring a long introduction by the renowned music journalist Chris Welch – who knew them from the start, toured with them and visited them at home – it is simply essential for their many admirers.

About Richard Morton Jack:

Richard Morton Jack’s other books include Nick Drake: The Life, Galactic Ramble, Endless Trip and Labyrinth. He has overseen reissues of many classic rock, jazz and folk albums, and edits the music history magazine Flashback. He is the co-founder of the music marketplace and archive elvinyl.com.

About Chris Welch:

Chris Welch is a music journalist, reviewer and critic who joined Melody Maker in 1964, a publication famous during the 1960s and 1970s for reporting on the rise of such bands as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, If, Cream, Jeff Beck and Jethro Tull. During that time he also reported on the UK jazz scene and was a fan of groups led by Graham Bond, Georgie Fame, Jon Hiseman and others. He has written books on several rock music personalities, including Jimi Hendrix, Yes, Steve Winwood, Black Sabbath, John Bonham, Led Zeppelin, Peter Grant, and Cream. He has also written liner notes for many rock albums.
