About this Event
This talk will talk about the many different Mary's in the bible and how their individual stories will change over the centuries. How do you recognise them in the arts and why are they are included in the way they are?
From liturgical leader to her role in salvation, to silent witness, how the Virgin Mary has been depicted in the arts has changed significantly over time. As has the role of Mary Magdalene, who went from Christ's favourite pupil and important teacher after his death, to sinner in later centuries. And what about the three other Mary's often depicted in paintings about the live of Christ: Mary of Clopas, Mary of Bethany, and Mary, mother of James? Who are they, and how do we recognise them?
Join us for a talk on how to recognise the different Mary's, their look, their story and their changing reception.
