Join us for an incredible opportunity to hear about real people from a small town in New Hampshire making a tangible difference in war-torn Ukraine. This presentation is a firsthand account from Susan Mathison, one of Common Man for Ukraine's four founders. She will recount how this group came to be, their mission, and their eye-opening experiences traveling to Ukraine to help it's children. The group started when four friends - Alex Ray, Lisa Mure, Steve Rand, and Susan Mathison chose to take action after Russia launched it’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They traveled to Ukraine soon after the first bombs fell and learned firsthand the devastating impact on children. Without an existing path to meet children’s needs, they reached across the globe to Rotary partners in Poland and Ukraine and built one.
With an estimated 2.5 billion internally displaced children in Ukraine, the pre-existing social service is overwhelmed and war-affected budgets are incapable of providing even basic aid to these children. After 11 trips into Ukraine, to date they have provided for 3M+ pounds of food, 10K+ sleeping bags, 100s of generators, and 900+ children in trauma counseling.
This presentation has been made possible by the Rotary Club of Newport and the Pacific Maritime and Heritage Center.
