About this Event

The Commedia dell'Arte is an Italian tradition known all over the world, to such an extent some masks have become a World Intangible Cultural Heritage recognised by UNESCO in 2010.

It's a transversal theatrical genre where different artistic skills and disciplines meet: from acrobatics to singing, from dance to improvisation, from dancing to fencing.

The Commedia dell' Arte is a universal theatrical language which, through the use of the mask, forms the link between pagan ritual theatr and professional theatre. The Commedia dell'Arte converts the actor into a true craftsman of the theatre capable of creating characters and stories close to people's personalities, stealing 'types' from everyday life and making them accessible to all audiences. In this way, universal, stylised and grotesque characters called 'masks' are born.

During the masterclass participants will have the opportunity to expand their understanding of archetypes, explore their creativity and physical expression and encourage the integration of movement and storytelling.

Jaq Bessell, Associate Professor of Acting/Programme Leader, BA(Hons) Acting, Guildford School of Acting

"With master Coppone I was able to improve awareness of my body by learning to control it in its smallest details and not to be controlled by it, training myself to clean up my movements so that each of them could be the bearer of a precise and universally understandable meaning. Like a master sculptor, he taught me to make the body the raw material to be modeled to give life to any character".
