Colvin Concerts: Compass Rose

Compass Rose sextet now has more than 20 years in the tank. Since 1999, we’ve been experimenting with a variety of music in the categories of world folk and gypsy jazz. Our goal has remained the same since we started out, to connect with diverse musical cultures without imitating them, and to combine melody, harmony, and rhythm in thoughtful, progressive compositions built around catchy and sophisticated structures. This encourages us to move about the globe with our ears open, intrigued by new sounds. As a result our original music takes a fresh approach to instrumental, acoustic music designed to appeal to listeners and dancers alike.

The last couple of years presented us with some unforeseen challenges and opportunities, both as a band and personally. And we took some time away for reflection, travel, musical research, and re-dedication. We’re now back at it, with a few changes of personnel along the way. To the founding core of Gary Cleland on bass, Larry Howe on mandolins, and Atiba Jali on percussion, two violinists jumped on board—first Andy Stees,, who made his mark with our second CD, Cosmopolitango; then Tom Bowling, who officially joined the band in 2011 and is a featured melodic presence in our latest recording. Our most recent addition, Bob Gerics on guitar, brings a wealth of musical experience and a fine sensitivity to the rhythmic signatures of our music to the middle of the sonic palette.

Food & Drink:

We have food and a selection of beverages (sodas, beer, and wine) for sale onsite at Colvin House! Guests can order from a limited menu each week.

Please note that we do not allow outside food or drinks at Colvin Concerts.

Parking Info:

The first 15 cars can park FREE at George B. Swift Elementary School, just two blocks west of Colvin House (as space allows). Please come to Colvin House's back door (off Thorndale Ave) first to receive a parking permit from staff who will provide further instructions.

We also recommend The Malibu Condominiums (6007 N Sheridan) public garage, just across the street, north of Colvin House. This parking can be validated by Colvin House for $2.00 off.

Those valet rates are as follows:

· 1 Hour: $6

· 2 Hours: $10

· 3 Hours: $11

· 4 Hours: $13

We recommend arriving early if you need to park.
