Join artist Christine Chua for ‘Pigment to Paint - Colours of the Earth’. In this workshop series participants will have the opportunity to transform ordinary earth into luxurious water-soluble paints.
This is a two-part workshop where participants learn how to make watercolours and egg tempera paints respectively. Some pigments that we will be using in both workshops include Thames Chalk London Clays and Charcoal.
For the first session participants will explore how to make traditional watercolours from foraged pigments. After grinding and refining dried earth into pigment participants will be exposed to natural binders that help turn pigment into watercolour. We will also discuss the various ways in which one can repurpose household objects into mulling equipment. As we learn to troubleshoot the paint-making process together participants will complete the session with a set of handmade watercolour paints to take home with them.
For the second session participants will be introduced to the ancient technique of making egg tempera. The workshop will be hands-on and practical as participants will be painting on a wooden surface and we will also be exploring traditional uses of the paints that we have made. Participants will learn more about sourcing natural pigments and how to ethically forage materials without harming the environment. All materials will be provided during the workshop but participants are encouraged to bring a sketchbook or a favourite pigment to the workshop.
