About this Event

Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of colour theory, colour perception and colour psychology, while examining the use of colour throughout history in art, design and culture. They will have the opportunity to understand fundamental colour concepts in depth and explore the effects of colour on human behaviour and emotions. The workshop combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on observation and experiments.

Theory and Knowledge of Colour

Part 1: Colour Fundamentals

• What is Colour?

The relationship between light, pigment and perception

• History of Colour and Colour Wheels

• Chronological study of colour theories and the work of theorists (Isaac Newton, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Moses Harris, Mary Gartside, Emily Noyes Vanderpoel)

Part 2: Colour Psychology

• Emotional and psychological effects of colour

• Connections between colour, human behaviour, and perception

• Interpretations of colour within cultural and historical contexts

Part 3: Introduction to Colour Therapy

• A brief look at the healing effects of colour in historical and cultural contexts

• Effects of colour on perception and emotions

• Raising awareness of how participants can notice and consciously use colour in daily life and creative processes

Creating a Colour Palette

Part 1: Colour Perception and Contrast

• Examples from the work of Josef Albers and Michel Eugène Chevreul

• Examination of simultaneous contrast and other perceptual effects

• Understanding colour relationships through observation and experiments

Part 2: Colour Exercises

• Hands-on exercises to create colour combinations

• Practical application of different colour theories

• Work on tone, saturation, contrast, and harmony

Part 3: Colour Journaling and Personal Palette Creation

• Participants select and document their own colour palettes

• Application of colour palettes in professional life (ways to adapt to their own profession or projects)

• Developing a personal colour palette

Notes:

• All materials will be provided during the workshop.

• Participants will have the opportunity to explore and study books from Zeynep Sagir’s platform, The Colour Club, relevant to the workshop topics.
