About this Event
Long Island returns to the world of Tóibín's most beloved novel, Brooklyn, a coming-of-age story about Eilis Lacey, a young Irishwoman emigrating to the United States soon after the Second World War.
In this richly imagined and exhilarating new novel, readers are reunited with Eilis, 20 years after the events of Brooklyn. It is the 1970s, and Eilis has built a secure and happy life with her husband Tony Fiorello and their two children in the suburbs of New York City – but when a stranger from Ireland knocks on their door and reveals a shocking piece of news, Eilis starts to question the life she has created. As she returns to Ireland, to a world she thought she had long left behind, she begins to wonder if she made the right choice, and if it is too late to take a different path.
Don’t miss the chance to hear Tóibín talk about this new story of emigration, loss and alternative lives and why he has returned to the world of Brooklyn. You can join him live at Kings Place in London, or via the livestream.
Colm Tóibín is the bestselling author of two short story collections and 10 previous novels, including Brooklyn, Nora Webster and The Empty Family. He has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times, and Brooklyn was adapted for an Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning film, starring Saoirse Ronan. He is the current laureate for Irish Fiction.
