This is a beginner-friendly workshop designed to help current/future home roasters understand roast levels, flavor development & processing.
About this Event

Curious about roasting coffee at home, but not sure where to start? Join a coffee roasting class led by Bradley from Experimental Coffee (https://experimental.coffee/).

Coffee Roasting 101 is a beginner-level coffee roasting workshop designed specifically for people with little to no roasting experience.

Before you invest in a home coffee roaster or go down the rabbit hole in your own research, this workshop helps you build the most important foundation: understanding what you actually like in a roast and why.

Many aspiring home roasters jump straight into equipment and data-heavy classes, only to feel overwhelmed or lost. This class exists to prevent that.

What You’ll Learn

In this hands-on, discussion-driven workshop, you’ll:

  • Explore light, medium, and dark roast levels through guided tasting
  • Learn how roast development produces flavor (acidity, sweetness, bitterness, body)
  • Understand how roasters manipulate time, heat, and airflow to shape coffee flavor
  • Learn how coffee processing methods (washed, natural, honey, experimental) interact with roast style

No roasting equipment is required. We will use an SR800 and Ailio Bullet R1 to practice on.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Curious coffee drinkers interested in home coffee roasting
  • Beginners considering buying a home roaster
  • Coffee lovers who feel intimidated by roasting jargon
  • Anyone who wants a clearer understanding of roast levels and flavor development

No prior roasting or coffee experience is required.

Why Start Here?

Most people don’t know what they’re “looking for” in a roast—yet.

This class helps you:

  • Avoid wasting money on equipment too early
  • Decide how deep you actually want to go into roasting
  • Prepare confidently for future hands-on roasting sessions

It’s also the recommended prerequisite for anyone interested in future Sip Society roasting workshops or in-home roasting experiences.
