Gallery Opening & Cocktail Party — "This Fragile Earth, Our Island Home"
Join us for an elegant evening celebrating the opening of a remarkable new exhibition — and the installation that inspired it.
The Gallery at the Cathedral of the Incarnation is proud to present new work by faculty and students from the Adelphi University Department of Art & Art History, created in direct response to Luke Jerram's monumental Gaia installation. On this opening night, the art, the artists, and the community that made it all possible come together beneath a 20-foot glowing Earth for cocktails, conversation, and live jazz from Manhattan Rhythm — New York's premiere jazz quartet.
This is a rare opportunity to experience the Cathedral nave at its most atmospheric: Gaia slowly turning overhead, contemporary art in dialogue with 140-year-old sacred architecture, and an evening that brings together artists, scientists, clergy, and neighbors around the questions Gaia asks of all of us: What does it mean to call this fragile planet home? And what are we called to do about it?
Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, music and conversation are included with admission! All are welcome.
All proceeds will go toward the Historic Stewart Building Preservation Fund, a non-profit established to increase public awareness of the architectural history of buildings and properties built by Alexander and Cornelia Stewart. These buildings include See House (the historic residence of the first bishops of Long Island) and the Cathedral of the Incarnation, a National Historic Landmark building.
