Creatives of Colour Festival presents a creative writing workshop with Candice Chung.

In first-person writing, how we choose to narrate our lived experience is just as important as what we’re trying to say. This workshop will explore the surprising power of formal experiments — both as a storytelling device and a political act.
What is the lyric tradition? What can it teach us about building narrative containers that are stronger, and more emotionally truthful than what the western canon offers? We will look to the pathbreaking works of authors like Bhanu Kapil, Xiaolu Guo and Lidia Yuknavitch. And together we’ll examine how we can subvert the idea of what makes a ‘good’ story and — indeed, a worthy life.
This course is suitable for writers of all levels of experience who are keen to experiment with first-person writing. Please bring a laptop to write with.

Candice Chung is a Glasgow-based author, editor and a creative writing teacher. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, BBC Radio, Feminist Food Journal, Gutter, The Scotsman, The Sydney Morning Herald and more. Her debut memoir CHINESE PARENTS DON'T SAY I LOVE YOU is named a LoveReading Best Book of 2025 and a Financial Times Best Summer Book of 2025. She is a judge for the 2026 Kavya Prize, which seeks to recognise the best writing from Scotland’s emerging writers of colour.

Creatives of Colour Festival

The festival centers the voices, experiences, and creativity of people of colour in Glasgow. Storytelling sits at the heart of these creative practices, and celebrates the resilience, joy, and talent of PoC artists. Co-curated by Zahra Khosroshahi and Kevin Leomo.

Our stories. Our lens. Our terms.

The Festival is supported by ‘Thinking Culture’, a cultural programme from the School of Culture & Creative Arts and the Ferguson Bequest, University of Glasgow.
