About this Event

Come to the ARC for a family-friendly, festive double feature of The Snowman and Mog's Christmas. You'll hear from Scotland's Printing Heritage about the possible Scottish origins of the Christmas card and the fascinating journey from illustration to print to screen.


The Snowman | 1982 | 26 Minutes

On Christmas Eve, a young boy builds a snowman that comes to life and takes him to the North Pole to meet Father Christmas.

Mog's Christmas | 2023 | 23 Minutes

Mog feels a little ignored during the Thomas family's Christmas preparations. When she spots the huge Christmas tree, she freaks out and climbs to the roof, where she refuses to move no matter how hard the family tries.

Talk

What does printing have to do with Christmas? Cards, paper, boxes, stamps, decorations, story books like The Snowman … the list is almost endless! This talk will take you through all the ways in which printing helps to make Christmas special and tell you the story of how greetings cards are made. We might also find the answer to whether first Christmas greetings card was really produced in Leith.

About Dr Helen S Williams

Dr Helen S Williams has been Honorary Secretary to the Trust since 2009. She was the Programme Manager for the celebration of 500 years of Printing in Scotland in 2008. Her research is centred on the technologies of the printing trade and the lives of the people who worked within it in the 19th century. She has written a number of articles and books chapters, including on the women compositors of Perth, and printers libraries. She is currently working on the history of training for the printing industry and on expanding the Trust’s series of local histories.

About Scotland's Printing Heritage

Scotland’s Printing Heritage (the Scottish Printing Archival Trust SC: 012320) was formed in 1988 to ‘preserve and promote the heritage of Scotland’s printing industry’. The Trust works with institutions across Scotland to ensure that archives and artefacts are not lost, and has a collection of trade literature and ephemera. The Trust has published a series of local histories of the industry in Scotland.
