counter)induction returns to Williamsburg Biannual on February 6 at 7pm for "Ephemeral Circuits," a site-specific concert that explores the architecture of this stunning adaptive-reuse warehouse. In virtuosic solo performances, c)i stretches out through WB’s 7,500 square feet of galleries and gathering spaces.
The program features Kyle Bartlett's "One May Come" for solo cello, a meditation on anticipation and longing; Douglas Boyce's "In Stylus Phantasticus" for clarinet, which reimagines 24-tone pitch materials through the lens of Baroque improvisatory freedom; "Touch" for viola and loop pedal, which illuminates the cellular response to human connection, exploring how this fundamental need resonates within our bodies; Andrerw Waggoner’s “The Old Ones” is a brooding and deeply felt work inspired by the blues greats, for classical guitar; and Michael Beil's "Key Jack" for pianist without a piano, a mind-bending exploration of virtualization and authenticity in which the performer is multiplied through video avatars while the instrument itself has vanished from the stage. The journey culminates with Jukka Tiensuu's "Rubato," reuniting the performers as they share a single melodic line performed with free tempos, creating ever-shifting layers of polyphony that bring the distributed architecture of the evening full circle.
NOTE: This is a standing show.
Opened to the public in Fall 2024, the Williamsburg Biannual is a new artist space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn serving the creative community of New York City. The Williamsburg Biannual’s home is an adaptive reuse and expansion of a 1920’s 10,000sf warehouse, beautifully designed by JAZ Architect. The Biannual’s premises include over 7,500sf of public gathering space, a black box event space for talks, films, and music, an informal auditorium and casual seating area, double-height galleries, and a private outdoor space. Exhibitions are complemented by music and dance performances, screenings, readings, and talks.
