About this Event

About this event

Join us for a creative workshop exploring the vivid and expressive world of Chinese opera mask-making.

In Chinese opera, facial makeup is a highly recognisable art form, with different colours and patterns used to represent the personality, identity and emotions of different characters. For example, red often symbolises loyalty and bravery, black represents integrity, and white can suggest cunning or complexity.

In this workshop, participants will first be introduced to the cultural background of Chinese opera masks and the meanings behind some of their most common colours and designs. ZheMing will then guide the group through the process of designing and painting their own mask, including how to choose colours, create balanced patterns and use lines to express different character traits.

Participants are welcome to take inspiration from traditional opera styles or to bring in their own creative ideas. This open approach makes the workshop suitable both for those who are curious about Chinese culture and for those who simply enjoy painting and design.

Basic mask templates and materials will be prepared in advance, allowing participants to focus on the creative process and cultural experience.
