About this Event
CHINESE FILM+Film and Video Art Festival Hamburg
About Chinese Film+

Chinese Film+ is a film and video festival organized by the non-profit organization "Chinesische Medien- und Filmkunst Verein" and co-hosted by B-Movie Hamburg. It provides a space for talented Chinese independent film authors and visual artists to present a realistic portrait of Chinese contemporary filmic art to the German audience, build a bridge of cultural exchange, and enrich Hamburg's local cultural diversity.

The event will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from January 10th to 15th, 2023. It includes 10 screenings of independent Chinese films (seven feature films and three short film compilations, five of which will be shown at B-Movie cinema) with the theme of "Night Walk" and an audiovisual art exhibition with the theme of "Film Pathology." Besides, we plan to organize post-screening Q&As and panel talks with artists and film professionals (such as directors, scholars, artists, and critics)..

Curator's Word

The "night walk" as an act of last resort, is a kind of romanticism and unyielding in abnormal circumstances. Under the dual influence of strict anti-epidemic policies and economic downturn, the creation and dissemination of independent cinema in China are faced with numerous difficulties. Filmmakers and artists must push their practices through the cracks, march through the long nights, and stay awake.

We' ve curated screenings of 9 feature-length films, 17 short films, and an exhibition of video art. The selection of these works has been based on a combination of criteria, including their critical spirit, aesthetic value and unique perspective. Through the showcase we hope to provide a transformative venue for these works in Hamburg, and offer a base for the "night walkers".

We would like to thank all the people who have helped us: the directors and artists who have given us a lot of trust, all the hard-working team members and volunteers, all the advisors and friends who have supported us with the curating and academic support of the exhibition, the local Hamburg audience who have supported us all the way, and finally HFBK, BKM Hamburg, B-movie, and the VILA Hermanos for their sponsorship of our project in various forms and for their great confidence and generous support in making this festival happen.

Synopsis:

The film tells the story of Chinese director Liu Yi (Louis Hothothot) returning home after many years in Europe. Through personal stories, it shows the devastating impact of China's one-child policy since 1979 on a family. IDFA officially called this work a spiritual journey full of surprises and subtleties.

About Riparian - Chinese Independent Film Showcase Hamburg

Riparian Chinese Independent Film Showcase is a film project initiated by Hanqi Sheng and Zhichao Zhu, two filmmakers who are based in Hamburg.

The festival focuses on different types of Chinese language art-house films. By presenting the works of independent filmmakers and video artists (with post-screening Q & A), the showcase presents a non-biased perspective of contemporary Chinese independent art cinema, provides a field for communication beyond boundaries, and enriches the diverse cultural ecology in Hamburg.

The film festival features monthly screenings in the Kino of HFBK Hamburg, and occasional workshops and forums in different urban spaces. The aim is to connect with each other through screenings and to encourage free expression through film.
