About this Event

This is a 4 hour training that introduces victim services professionals into the basics of investigating sexual abuse cases.


TITLE: CHILD MALTREATMENT SERIES- ADVANCING YOUR KNOWLEDGE: Understanding Institutional Child Abuse Cases

*All Child Maltreatment Series trainings are sensitive in nature, attendee discretion is advised.

SUMMARY:

Institutional child abuse is exceptionally complicated, as psychological trauma and actual physical or sexual abuse often occurs in the same case. Institutional abusers are often people in positions of power and authority over the children involved and can be from any type of institution. This course will discuss and review institutional cases throughout history and how institutions can prevent further abuse.

At the end of this training, participants will:

*understand notable cases.

*understand the challenges of institutional cases.

*understand prevention and policy development for institutions.


PRESENTER: David A. Betz

Dave currently serves as the Vice President of Operations at the National Children’s Alliance. Prior to this role, he dedicated twenty-five years to the Harford County, MD Sheriff’s Office, where he held various positions including Director of the Harford County Child Advocacy Center and investigator of child abuse cases from 1998 to 2011. Throughout his career, Dave also served as the Public Information Officer/Spokesperson, a member of the Special Response Team, and held assignments in the Patrol Division. He is recognized as an instructor in workplace violence prevention.

Dave's commitment to child advocacy extends beyond his local roles. He has contributed significantly to the field as a member of the National Children’s Alliance Board of Directors and an advisory board member of the Child Protection Center in Cedar Falls, IA. He is also involved with the Maryland Children’s Alliance and the Iowa Chapter of Child Protection Centers.

In addition to his law enforcement and advocacy work, Dave has shared his expertise as a business consultant for various non-profit and for-profit organizations. He has owned and operated several businesses, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit.

Dave is highly educated, holding a Doctor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Leadership from Liberty University. He earned his Master’s Degree in Management from Johns Hopkins University and his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, also from Liberty University. His professional certifications include Certified Protection Professional and Professional Certified Investigator from the American Society for Industrial Security.

Certificate of Training, Social Work CEUs and Academic Credits:

RVAAM selected curriculum has been approved for specific professions (e.g. social work, law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole) Upon completion of an online evaluation form, participants are welcome to request a Certificate of Training; Social Work Category I Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and/or academic credits. All participants are eligible to receive a Certificate of Training (1 credit per training hour).

In order to receive a Certificate of Training, participants video cameras must remain on during all V-STEP Webinar trainings.
