About the panel

Abda Khan

Abda Khan is a lawyer turned writer and author of the novels ‘Stained’ (2016), and ‘Razia’ (2019). She has finished her third book, and is researching her next book, which will be her first historical novel. Her work has also been featured in anthologies and other publications.

In ‘Sidelines to Centre Stage’ (2019) she delivered writing workshops to survivors of domestic violence and female ex-prisoners whose work was shared (anonymously). In 2020/21 Abda was co-creator of ‘Jumping the Middings’ capturing stories of childhood in 1970’s Bradford. In 2022 she has delivered ‘Tappay Tales’, a community based project which explored traditional Pakistani folk songs through creative writing and performance. She is a Desi Blitz Arts Ambassador, and won British Muslim Woman of the Year in 2019

Shahida Rahman

Shahida was born and raised in Cambridge, UK. Her late father, Abdul Karim moved to Cambridge from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1957. Shahida writes historical fiction, non-fiction and children’s stories, particularly focusing on and raising awareness of South Asian history, culture and heritage. Her first novel ‘Lascar‘, the highly acclaimed novel is the story of a lascar (seaman), was published in 2012. ‘An Ayah’s Choice’, which tells the story of an Indian Ayah was published in March 2022.

Reshma Ruia

Reshma Ruia is a writer and poet. She has a PhD and Master’s in Creative Writing from Manchester University. Her first novel, Something Black in the Lentil Soup, was described in the Sunday Times as ‘a gem of straight-faced comedy’. She has published a poetry collection, A Dinner Party in the Home Counties, and a short story collection, Mrs Pinto Drives to Happiness. Her work has appeared in international anthologies and journals, and commissioned by the BBC, University of Cumbria and Manchester Literature Festival. She is the co-founder of The Whole Kahani – a writers’ collective of British South Asian writers. Her new novel, Still Lives is out now.
