About this Event

About the speaker

Cliff Elwell is Professor of Building Physics at the UCL Energy Institute, where he leads the Physical Characterisation of Buildings group, directs the Smart Energy and the Built Environment MSc, and is Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy Resilience and the Built Environment (ERBE).

Cliff’s research focuses on understanding and improving the observed performance of the fabric, heating and ventilation of buildings. He develops and refines methods to better characterise the built environment, aiming to derive actionable insights from measured building performance data to solve real-world challenges in energy efficiency, flexibility, and healthy indoor environments.

His research combines physical principles with statistical analysis, including frequentist and Bayesian methods. He and his team measure and develop physically informed models to characterise building performance, undertake analysis and relate these outcomes to the complex socio-technical interactions that affect building performance. His research aims to support policymakers, industry and ultimately consumers in reducing carbon emissions, cutting costs and enabling wider decarbonisation, whilst improving the indoor environment.
