Meet with writer Emma Flint to examine the central issue of characterisation.
About this Event

In this session we'll come together with writer Emma Flint to examine the central issue of characterisation. What constitutes a well-rounded character is one of the most basic keys to successful writing. What is the difference between a two and three dimensional character? Should they be consistent throughout the narrative or should they change? Does a character need to be likeable? And what is the connection between character and plot?

These are some of the key questions I'll be putting to Emma, and she's raring to hear your questions too. Together, we'll create a lively discussion, arming us with the tools to build strong, authentic and relatable characters that will form the heart of our stories.

Long-listed for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction, a BBC Radio 2 Book Club Pick, and Guardian Best Thriller Novelist, 2023, Emma Flint has been writing fiction since she knew what stories were. She graduated from the University of St. Andrews with an MA in English Language and Literature, later completing a novel-writing course at the Faber Academy. She is regularly asked to share her wisdom at book events, both in the UK and internationally.

"When I’m writing, I enjoy using my imagination to poke around in the darker reaches of the human mind, and to explore what people are capable of under extreme circumstances. I like to linger on physical descriptions, and to exploit those tiny essential details that make characters human."

Date & Timing: Monday 5th February. Doors open at 6.30pm. Please aim to arrive on time as we'll start at 7pm prompt. We'll adjourn to the main bar after the session for a few social drinks and conversation but no problem if you can't hang around. And Monday nights are cheap pie and pint night at Three Tuns!

Guests: You can now invite a friend/guest to attend with you. Simply book them a ticket with yours. They don't need to be a member but ideally they will also be a writer - or a good storyteller, at least. Strictly no children (under 18s) are allowed for safeguarding reasons.

Location: The Three Tuns Aldgate, is located at 36 Jewry Street, EC3N 2ET. It's two mins from Aldgate station and less than 10 mins from Liverpool Street Three Tuns Pub in London.
