About this Event

It's hard to think of a festivity, celebration, or New Year's Eve party without a glass of champagne. After all, with 322 million bottles of it sold in 2021 alone, it's the undisputed king of drinks that ring in the good times. What's the backstory of this storied sparkling wine hailing from the Champagne region of France, and what important role did it play in Western culture over the past several hundred years? It's time to uncover the story of French bubbly like never before.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the sparkling story of champagne, from the history of the French region of Champagne over the past several hundred years to how sparkling wine producers targeted their marketing first toward nobility and royalty and then to the middle class.

Led by Edith de Belleville — French licensed tour guide, author, and attorney-at-law — our digital showcase of champagne will include:

  • The origins of champagne, from who's credited with inventing it to why it came from a specific region in France
  • How champagne became associated with royalty in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries,
  • The clever marketing secrets of champagne and what leading manufacturers did to first attract the upper class before the 20th century, and then later for the emerging middle class of the 20th century
  • How this prestigious and popular beverage is made and why it's always associated with “party tradition"
  • A look at the beautiful champagne publicity from the Belle Époque era made by the most creative artists of the day
  • A discussion of some of the most well-known champagne brands including Veuve Cliquot, named after Madame Clicquot who became the queen of champagne thanks to establishing her wine in royal courts throughout Europe
  • A breakdown of what separates a champagne from a sparkling wine

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Edith — any and all questions about champagne is welcomed and encouraged!
