The UWA Medical Humanities Network presents a guest lecture by Prof Jon Jureidini, child psychiatrist from the University of Adelaide:
Challenging lives, not broken brains: addressing social determinants of mental health.
Jon will discuss the importance of recognising and the social determinants of mental health, myths around disadvantage and approaches to de-pathologising distress. His talk will be followed by an open Q&A session.
Prof Jon Jureidini is a child psychiatrist of 38 years who is also trained in philosophy (PhD, Flinders University), critical appraisal (University of British Columbia) and psychotherapy (Tavistock Clinic). He heads the Critical and Ethical Mental Health research group (CEMH) at the University of Adelaide, which conducts research, teaching and advocacy to promote safer, more effective and ethical research and practice in mental health; and the Paediatric Mental Health Training Unit (PMHTU), providing training and support to medical students GPs, allied health professionals, teachers and counsellors in non-pathologising approaches to primary care mental health.
He held senior positions at WCH from 1990 – 2021, where his clinical work included child protection, immigration detention and Indigenous mental health in remote areas. He has an international reputation for his work on the evidence-base for psychiatry and is a strong advocate for addressing the social determinants of mental health.
Jon’s most recent book is titled: ‘the Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine: Exposing the crisis of credibility in clinical research’, co-authored by Leemon B McHenry (2020) and available through Wakefield Press.

Paid parking (including ACROD spaces) is available at close proximity to the lecture theatre, down Caladenia Crescent. Free street parking is available down Hampden Road and on adjacent side-streets.
Registration commences at 530pm with light refreshments provided thanks to the UWA Medical Humanities Network.
Jon’s lecture will start at 545pm, and the event will close at 7pm.
