Assessment: Students will be assessed through various methods such as class discussions, presentations, but there are no written examinations.

There are no modules with credits and this would mean you either attend the entire programme to attain a certificate of attendance.

Please note there are no “work placements” or 'field trips'

Course Overview - The Certificate in Contextual Leadership for British Muslim Imams and Alimas is designed to equip contemporary British Muslim religious leaders [ Imams, duaa't, Dar al-Ulum graduates, ISOC and mosque trustees and management ] with the contextual knowledge, pastoral skills and leadership capacity required to serve effectively within modern UK society while safeguarding Islamic authority, ethical integrity and intra-faith pluralism. The course addresses the rapidly evolving social, institutional and pastoral realities facing imams and alimas in Britain today. Participants will critically engage with questions of authority, community leadership, safeguarding, pastoral care, intergenerational tensions, social cohesion, public engagement and institutional navigation. Grounded in Islamic ethics and reflective practice, the programme combines academic insight with practical training and peer learning.


Learning Outcomes - By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand British Muslim history and internal community diversity.

2. Critically understand the changing role of imams and alimas in Britain and the structural challenges facing Muslim communities.

3. Navigate UK civic, safeguarding and educational institutions with confidence and ethical clarity.

4. Apply pastoral boundaries, referral literacy and trauma-aware listening in complex cases.

5. Communicate effectively with diverse congregations, media and public institutions.

6. Develop reflective leadership practices rooted in Islamic ethics and contextual awareness.

7. Build collaborative strategies for community resilience, inclusion and intergenerational engagement.


Teaching Methods - The course uses a participatory adult-learning model integrating:

Interactive lectures; Scenario-based learning; Case study analysis; Group workshops ;

Practical communication exercises

About the course presenters: *

Main instructor:

*Dr Sadek Hamid is an academic of contemporary Islam who specialises in the study of British Muslims. He has held teaching and research positions at the Universities of Chester, Liverpool Hope, Oxford University Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Wales, Trinity St. David, Cambridge Muslim College and is a Visiting Scholar at the University of Edinburgh. His work explores the various aspects of lived Islam in Britain and has written numerous books on the subject including; Sufis, Salafis and Islamists: The Contested Ground of British Islamic Activism, British Muslims: New Directions in Islamic Thought, Creativity and Activism, Young British Muslims: Between Rhetoric and Realities and most recently Contemporary British Muslim Arts and Cultural Production: Identity, Belonging and Social Change. He has worked with Muslim communities for nearly 40 years and prior to transitioning to academia was a youth and community development professional. He is co-founder of the Manchester Muslim Forum (www.manchestermuslimforum.com), a monthly public platform for intellectual engagement, collaboration and problem-solving.


Guest instructors:

*Shaykha Saleha Bukhari completed her Aalimah (seminary studies and specialisation in Prophetic traditions (Dawratul Hadith) at Ebrahim College. She has studied with and obtained ijāzāt from Shaykh Akram Nadwi (Al-Salam Institute, London), Shaykh Hatim ibn Arif al-Awni (Umm al- Qura University, Makkah-Saudi Arabia) and Shaykh Qari Bashir Ahmed Siddique (Masjid An-Nabawi). She has a BSc Hons in computing and currently serves as a chaplain at Canary Wharf Multi-Faith Chaplaincy in London and teaches fiqh and advanced qira’ah at Ebrahim College. She is a member of the Board of Scholars at The Muslim Law (Shariah) Council UK and supports various other councils mainly working on cases of Islamic divorce and a Shariah Content Consultant for Islamic Relief and a regular guest on Islam Channel’s IslamiQA. In recognition of her service, she was awarded the Most Impactful Ālimah Award 2024 at the British Beacon Mosque Awards and shortlisted for Religious Advocate of the Year at the 12th British Muslim Awards 2025. As well as being a wife and mother, she currently pursuing Advanced Islamic Jurisprudence (Iftā’), further deepening her ability to address complex legal and pastoral issues with scholarly integrity and compassion.


*Mawlana Dr Haroon Ebrahim Sidat is a scholar of Islam with an interest in Islamic theology, law, sufism, and the social sciences. He joined the Islam-UK Centre at Cardiff University in 2015 after being awarded the Jameel scholarship for postgraduate study. His thesis explored the fascinating world of the dārul ‘ulūm in modern Britain. Since then, he has been involved in research on imams in Britain and is now part of the project that explores the Islamic intellectual legacy that seeks to answer civilizational questions in the modern world. Recently, he has published a paper that explores the interaction between Islamic law, history, ethics, and contemporary concerns for Muslims living in the West in a paper titled ‘Competing Spaces of Religious Belonging: Deobandi Debates on Interest/Usury as a Case Study’. The second contribution is a book chapter with Edinburg University Press ‘The Taalib as a Bricoleur: Transitioning from Madrasah to University in Modern Britain’ which is a reflection on his experiences of transitioning and inhabiting two worldviews at the same time: the classical Islamic tradition and the modern university. He is preparing a manuscript based on his thesis which will explore the history, lived reality and imagination of the madrasa in modern Britain. His other contributions will be on the topic of Islamic ethics, law, theology, revivalist movements, and how Muslim scholars engage with the three Muslim publics: mosque, society, and academia.
