We live in a world where communication is one of the hardest things that humans do (or don't do). When we get it wrong it can have devastating effects on the human psyche. In the extreme it can lead to wars, violence, and various degrees of mental and physical pain that can last a lifetime. Knowing this, why don't we humans do more to actively learn and practice the whole communication thing?
School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe in collaboratioin with The Quiets invites you to join us for Cereal Party: Please Don't Put Your Dick In My Face edition, an online event focused on having and documenting serial conversations with strangers on the topics of love, sex, society, and self as part of the transmediale Vorspiel 2021 program.
In between dodgy wifi and can-you-hear-me’s we attempt to communicate effectively across cyberspace, but without the non-verbal cues of body language to guide us, finding the right words becomes more important than ever.
In this event you will be invited to a series of small and intimate conversations with strangers to listen and to share your experiences on what it means to speak honestly and openly about difficult topics in the age of the pandemic and beyond.
As part of this intervention, conversations will be artistically documented by The Quiets, an experimental data art collective and silent observation agency who listen to conversations and collect interpretive data on whatever catches their attention. Note: Names and videos will not be recorded during the sessions and any information taken will be anonymised and used for artistic purposes only.
Come join us in the artful practice of telling microtruths and learning together what it feels like to communicate the hard things in life to ourselves and others.
Note: if we were having these conversations in person they would be happening over a bowl of cereal. Please feel free to bring yours with!
