Announcing the launch of Celluloid Supper Club, presented in association with Celluloid Social Club and Shamshiri Caveman Restaurant.

On Sundays every month or so, Celluloid Supper Club will invite a local filmmaker to present their feature film and give the audience a special peek behind the curtain. Screenings may include Behind the Scenes footage, pitch videos, a look at their earlier shorts work, and possibly even special guests; and will always incorporate thoughtful discussions, Q&As, networking, a chance to win prizes from local sponsors, a 50/50 raffle, and include a meal and drink with your ticket!

Hosted by local comedian Rachel Rueker, the inaugural event we will be presenting Special Guest Joel Ashton McCarthy (founder Run N Gun) to screen his feature film SHOOTING: THE MUSICAL, preceded by his Crazy8s short I LOVE YOU SO MUCH IT’S KILLING THEM (for which he won the 2017 Leo Award for Best Direction of a Short Drama), followed by an in depth conversation and Q&A with Joel.

Be there or be square! Bragging rights hold value– one day you’ll be able to say “I was there at the very first Celluloid Supper Club”... (plus you’ll have a great time watching films, listening to the inside scoop on getting films made, mingling, eating and drinking!)

Special Guest Joel Ashton McCarthy is a multi-award-winning director and writer based in Vancouver, BC. He is best known for his feature films, including controversial comedy Shooting: The Musical (2014); documentaries Taking My Parents to Burning Man (2014) and I Am Alfred Hitchcock (2021); Crazy8s Top 6 short I Love You So Much It’s Killing Them (2016), which won the 2017 Leo Award for Best Direction Short Drama; and two Talent To Watch web series, including the semi-autobiographical Inconceivable (2016–2017), which won the 2018 Leo Award for Best Web Series and was nominated for the 2018 Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakout Short Series.

Joel is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of British Columbia’s biggest 48-hour film competition, Run N Gun, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary this May. He taught Directing at Vancouver Film School from 2017 to 2023. Most recently, Joel has been working on USA Network’s Highway Thru Hell, with directing credits on 16 episodes since 2023.

Much of Joel’s work is available to stream on YouTube, via This Is a Spoon Studios.

Host Rachel Ruecker is a comedian, performer, storyteller, and a girl. She grew up in Vancouver (well, the burbs, but she won’t tell if you won’t). She believes in magic and sparkles and romantic comedy-style happy endings. she hopes you do too. She’s inspired by nostalgia and she spends a lot of time on public transit daydreaming and listening to the killers. It’s probably ruining her life. She also does stand up comedy. That too is probably ruining her life.

Produced by Paul Armstrong and Sierra Wilson-Furr.

Meal options include:

- Vegetarian Lasagna

- Glazed Honey Ham (or Tofu) with Rice

- 8’ Personal Pizza: Cheese, Pepperoni, Chicken, or Veggie

An order form will be emailed to you before the event and include the opportunity to indicate unique dietary restrictions. The Shamshiri Caveman kitchen is highly adept at catering to unique allergies.
