About this Event
Learn to diagnose and fix basic cell phone problems with Karlen!
This workshop will cover an overview of cell phone repair, including theory, identification, repair approaches (battery, screen, and other components) and general troubleshooting. The class includes a hands on lesson disassembling a provided utility model iPhone SE 2020, front to back!
This workshop is focused on learning about cell phone repair via presentation and demonstration rather than actively repairing our personal phones during the workshop. We will not be covering software-related issues (such as lack of storage), but rather physical issues including such as battery, screen, and camera replacement. We will also talk through more complex physical repairs such as replacing buttons and some best practices for keeping your phone happy via cleaning and charging habits.
We will be working with example phones that are set up so we can take them apart and put them back together. Our example models are mostly the iPhone SE 2020 with one or two iPhone 8. However, Karlen will also happily give overviews to any device that a model number can be provided for and explain how to do a variety of repairs. We will also provide you with resources for acquiring parts and tools for your at-home repair.
Participants of all skill levels are welcome to this course!
We will have a 15 minute break during this course.
Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook for notetaking if desired.
Note on Sliding Scale Pricing:
Repair PDX seeks to both pay our instructors equitably and keep ticket prices accessible.
Not every event we run is independently solvent. We provide sliding scale, reduced tickets for volunteers, and other low cost opportunities because of our values. Thus, we rely on those with more financial support to pay the higher end of the sliding scale in order to offset the low-cost tickets. As such, you will see a variety of ticket prices for the same event and we encourage you to pay what you can.
Proceeds from tickets go directly to paying our wonderful instructors, providing materials for the class, and continuing to host events and workshops like this one!
If there is space in the class but no low-cost or volunteer tickets and you would like one, please email [email protected] and we'll open one up for you.
