’We remain Hungarian as long as we speak in Hungarian, think in Hungarian, and learn in Hungarian.’ – Sándor Kányádi On the occasion of the Day of National Unity, the Liszt Institute Brussels cordially invites you to a folk music concert by the Tokos Ensemble.
•
The Day of National Unity, held each year on 4 June, was established by the Hungarian Parliament in 2010 to honour the shared heritage and enduring spiritual unity of all Hungarians, regardless of where they live. While the date marks the anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon (1920), the remembrance transcends historical grievance, serving instead as a reaffirmation of the deep bonds that unite Hungarian communities worldwide through language, music, dance, and tradition.
•
The Tokos Ensemble performs authentic Hungarian folk music. The group was formed in the early 2010s under the influence of the folkdance house movement in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca) by five students of the local Academy of Music. From playing at local dance houses and festivities in their early years, they rose to national prominence by winning first prize in the folk music talent show „Felszállott a páva” in 2014. In 2017, they presented their debut album, “Hallgassátok meg, magyarim” (’Listen, my Hungarians’), at the Hungarian Opera of Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca).
The concert celebrates not only music but memory, identity, and belonging, bringing together distant voices of a shared heritage.
