Susan Straight’s 2022 novel Mecca was selected by Alta Journal as one of “25 Books That Define California.” Now this consummate chronicler of the American West returns with a companion novel to Mecca. Sacrament unfolds during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, following a group of ICU nurses at a hospital in San Bernardino as they are pushed to their physical and spiritual limits. Straight’s astute remembrances and observations bring back to the surface emotions readers may have started to forget; as Kirkus writes in a starred review, “Straight reminds us of where we have been and where we are going without once looking away.” In this special pre-publication launch event, attendees will be among the first to get their hands on a copy of Sacrament and to hear Straight read from and discuss her novel, in conversation with novelist and book critic Vanessa Hua. FREE, $10-15 suggested donation
