About this Event
Start Point: Tilberthwaite Quarry car park (Postcodes are unreliable in rural areas. The confirmation email contains precise details of how to find this car park)
Length: 7 km (4.4miles) with 256m (832ft) of ascent
Time: 4 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 4 (see grade description below)
This walk starts from Tilberthwaite and follows the public way to Little Langdale. Here the features include the much-photographed Slater Bridge, one of Lakeland’s ancient pedestrian bridges, and the spectacular Cathedral Cave, a large chamber produced by 19th century slate mining and once owned by Beatrix Potter. Finally the route returns to Tilberthwaite via the impressive Hodge Close quarry.
Paths are generally good but there are some sections that may be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather. There are some steep sections and other features such as stiles and kissing gates on the route.
Grade 4 walks are generally full day walks that include hilly ground and require a reasonable level of fitness. You might encounter climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces may be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, and you may also find yourself walking up irregular steps, over stiles or through narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch. Please see the main webpage for more details.
Public transport: There is no public transport link to Tilberthwaite. The nearest bus stop is in Coniston, 4km from the start of the walk.
Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
