This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to start their journey in cartooning and comics.

Facilitator:

David Shenton was born in Ashton-under-Lyne, 75 years ago. After art school and a degree in Printmaking, David moved to Norwich and began teaching. In 1978, queer politics struck and he found he could write, draw and tell jokes and so became a reluctant cartoonist pointing out the foibles and idiosyncrasies of Gay Life in a small town in Norwich and getting them published in Gay News.

The cartoons expanded into a regular job and different clients started commissioning his work; including The Guardian and Cambridge University Press. The art teaching was gradually dropped when queer politics took a more serious turn in the 1980s with HIV/AIDS and Clause 28, and the classic 4 frame fun strip cartoon had to grow up.

David moved back to Norwich in 2012, still drawing as much as ever, but now with some pieces evolving into craftivism, where queer politics are expressed in knitted work and sewn patchworks. Some of these finished artworks have now been acquisitioned by museums in Norwich, Sheringham, and in Queer Britain.
