About this Event
Carl Stone returns to the Bay Area for an intimate performance of solo electronic music. Stone is one of the pioneers of live computer music, and has been hailed by the Village Voice as “the king of sampling” and “one of the best composers living in (the USA) today.” He has used computers in live performance since 1986. Stone was born in Los Angeles and now divides his time between Los Angeles and Japan. He studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick and James Tenney and has composed electro-acoustic music almost exclusively since 1972. He is a faculty member in the Department of Media Engineering at Chukyo University in Japan.
Following his solo set, Stone will reunite with Paul Dresher for a collaborative performance, continuing a creative dialogue first explored at the studio two years ago—moving from distinct sonic worlds into a shared, richly layered electro-acoustic landscape. Dresher is a composer, performer, and inventor of new musical instruments whose work blends acoustic and electronic sound in inventive and expressive ways. He is the founder of the Paul Dresher Ensemble and has collaborated with a wide range of artists across disciplines, creating music for concerts, theater, dance, and film.
