FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AGES 16-25

Careers in Writing is designed to inspire, inform, and connect young writers who are passionate about pursuing careers in the world of writing or seeking further education in literary and book-based fields. Hosted by Birmingham City University (BCU) in collaboration with Writing West Midlands (WWM), this event will offer a dynamic mix of 1-2-1 sessions, expert talks, and hands-on workshops, providing participants with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to advance their writing careers.

Event Highlights:

  • 1-2-1 Sessions: Personalised meetings with industry professionals, where participants can seek advice, ask questions, and receive tailored career guidance.

  • Interactive Workshops: Hands-on learning sessions focused on specific aspects of creative writing.

Panels:

1. From Pitch to Publication

Ever wondered how a manuscript becomes a published book? This panel dives into the heart of traditional publishing, offering a closer look at how books are discovered, developed and delivered to readers. From landing an agent to working with an editor, find out what the journey to publication really involves, and how to make your story stand out in a crowded market.

  • Amandeep Singh – Literary agent for Graham Maw Christie
  • Kasim Ali – Writer and book editor

2. Beyond the Book Deal:

There’s more to a career in writing than writing. This panel explores the vibrant ecosystem around books and literature, with insights from those who champion authors, curate festivals, and connect readers with great stories. Learn how creative skills, industry insight and a passion for literature can translate into a wide range of exciting careers that aren’t just about writing your novel.

  • Jane Commane – Editor and Director of Nine Arches Press
  • Peri Cimen – Bookseller at Waterstones Birmingham
  • Shantel Edwards – Birmingham Literature Festival Director

3. Writing for Performance

Not all writing lives on the page – and some of the most exciting opportunities for writers today happen off it. This panel explores the world of writing for performance, from theatre and film making to writing for audio, spoken word, and poetry. Find out how scripts, soundscapes and stories are brought to life through voice and movement, and how this powerful, often overlooked area of writing could be the start of a creative career you never knew was possible.

  • Zakariye – Performance poet and filmmaker
  • Charis McRoberts – Theatre maker, audio scriptwriter and playwright

Workshops:

Participants will be able to take part in a practical, small-group workshop led by lecturers from BCU’s Creative Writing MA team. These sessions are designed to stretch your creativity and deepen your craft. You’ll be able to choose your preferred workshop on the day.

Careers in Writing 2025 is proud to be supported by Birmingham City University (BCU) and Authors Licencing and Collecting Society (ALCS).
