About this Event
As exultant as its title suggests, Wer sich selbst erhöhet (“Whoever exalts himself”), BWV 47 premiered on October 13, 1726 as part of Bach’s third cantata cycle. The 5-part work has a neatly symmetrical form. A soprano aria follows the opening chorus, with a bass recitative holding the center, and an alto aria and chorale tune cementing the end of the work. Typically elaborate, the oboes foreshadow the vocal theme in an extended orchestral opening. Playing with arrogance and modesty, the chorale struggles with the two angels of our nature before settling into tranquil humility in the final cantata.
Colorado Bach Ensemble’s “Cantata Insights Series” gives audiences an opportunity to learn more about Bach’s many cantatas. In these popular and educational concerts, has a special way of explaining what he knows, drawing you into the wonders of Bach’s music. After James gives his insights on a “guided tour” through the cantata, the ensemble performs the work in its entirety, giving the audience a fresh perspective of one of Bach’s magnificent works.
