Dark and introspective, Sie werden euch in den Bann tun (“They will put you under banishment”), BWV 44 premiered on May 21, 1724 as part of Bach’s first cantata cycle. Similar to the work of his Baroque contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann, Bach made the unusual choice to break the liturgical text into two movements. Typically Bach opened his cantatas with a chorus, but in this instance a duet between the alto and tenor leads into a continuation of the text with a full chorus. The lamentation of the early movements transforms into jubilation with the soprano aria “Es ist und bleibt der Christen Trost” and final chorale “So sei nun, Seele, deine.”
