About this Event
Cinevolution is back with a third edition of National Canadian Film Day programming!
This year, we are thrilled to present The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam (2003), an earlier work by director Ann Marie Fleming, whose animated feature film, Window Horses (2016), delighted Richmond audiences as part of Cinevolution's 2024 CanFilmDay program.
In The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam, Ann Marie takes us with her on her journey across the globe, into museum collections and magicians' basements, as she sets out to learn the truth about her great grandfather -- a remarkable man whose fascinating life unfolded against a backdrop of tremendous turmoil and change. If you like magic, history, animation, or just a plain good story, you won't want to miss this film.
Director Ann Marie Fleming will join us for a post-film Q&A.
The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam
Director: Ann Marie Fleming | 2003 | Documentary | 88 min
Who was Long Tack Sam?
He was born in 1885. He ran away from Shangdung Province to join the circus. He was an acrobat. A magician. A comic. An impresario. A restaurateur. A theater owner. A world traveler. An East-West ambassador. A mentor to Orson Welles. He was considered the greatest act in the history of vaudeville.
In this first-person road movie, his great-granddaughter, the artist and filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming, resurrects his fascinating life for the rest of the world. The whimsical and thought-provoking documentary offers an incredible insight into a forgotten icon from a fascinating era of theatrical history.
