About this Event
This will be a two hour slow walk through the accumulation of capital in Canary Wharf. We will explore the history of the docks, dockers' unions, the impact of containerisation and technical change.
And from that starting point discover how capital is accumulated and what the implications are for working class communities, exploitation, the labour process and alienation.
We will look at individual buildings in terms of their capital investments, the role of the finance sector and consider the future of the office.
Along the way we will stand and stare up at immense technical constructions of glass, steel and concrete and ask, was it a cable or a camel that would have problems with the eye of an needle? And delve into Marx's use of metaphor and his literary style.
