VLACC and TEMPO Dance & Visual Art are proud to present Camino y Despedida (Walking Farewells), an interdisciplinary production that explores migration, identity, and hope through contemporary dance, live music, and multilingual storytelling.
About the Work
Camino y Despedida is an interdisciplinary performance embracing culture, language, and identity, co-created by six Latin American artists from Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia.
After two years of exploration through solo, duet, and trio formats, the piece has evolved into a powerful ensemble work that interweaves contemporary dance, live music (including original songs), video projection, and multilingual text.
“Through the work, we reconnect with our roots while confronting the nuances of privilege that allow us to live on these unceded territories. We reflect on the struggles of erasure: Why must we sacrifice parts of our identity, language, and culture to survive? What does it mean to miss a home where we no longer belong or cannot return? Amidst sorrow, there is laughter; amidst hardship, a rediscovery of joy and community.” — Marco Esccer.
Though deeply personal, the work resonates on a universal level—especially within today’s global context of displacement, conflict, and shifting immigration policies. The piece blends Spanish, Portuguese, and Nahuatl, interwoven with English to bridge Latin American stories with North American audiences. It evokes the sensations of hope, sorrow, joy, nostalgia, and aspiration for a better life—illuminating the resilience found in connection and the emotional journey of migration (Camino) and farewells (Despedida).
