Adopt a coral - Grow life on it - Win the award! Are you under 35? Based in Copenhagen? Curious about ecology, art, urban nature — or just willing to try something that matters? Write us to join and get more info right away. Your urban coral is waiting! 😊🌱🌟
On Refshaleøen in Copenhagen, where a large shipyard used to operate, something unusual has taken shape.
A series of sculptural forms, the Urban Corals — originally designed as artificial reefs for life beneath the water. Now standing on land. Waiting for your action.
Last year, the weather was hard on the urban corals. Life struggled to find its footing. The moss never took off. The corals remained mostly bare. Nature is patient. But you could give it a gentle hand.
This spring, we’re inviting young people in Copenhagen to adopt an urban coral. To bring us your best crack at how to bring the coral mosses to life.
There’s no single right method. You might work with moss and moisture. Build small habitats in the cracks and hollows. Plant seeds. Create shelters for insects and pollinators. Make a cover against the sun - or the wind. Wrap sheets around the urban coral. Feel free to find your way in — through art, through design, through sheer curiosity.
Tell us about your efforts as you act. Our team will be with you for sparring, and support as your experiment develops. We even have a small materials budget for you if you need it.
At the end of August, a jury will evaluate what you’ve created. Not just whether life grew — but how you thought, how you documented, how you tried.
First prize is 6,000 kroner. Second prize, 2,500. And the winners gets to keep their urban coral.
