Bye Bye Birdie is a vibrant, Tony Award-winning musical comedy that captures the high-energy frenzy of late-1950s rock and roll fandom. The story follows the chaos that erupts when hip-swiveling rock idol Conrad Birdie—a humorous nod to Elvis Presley—is drafted into the U.S. Army.
Desperate to save their business, songwriter Albert Peterson and his efficient assistant/long-suffering girlfriend, Rosie, hatch a plan for a final publicity stunt: having Conrad give a "one last kiss" to one lucky teenage fan on The Ed Sullivan Show. The chosen fan, Kim MacAfee of Sweet Apple, Ohio, is thrilled, but the stunt creates jealousy for her new steady boyfriend, Hugo, and causes uproar in her small town.
Featuring iconic, high-energy musical numbers like "Put on a Happy Face," "The Telephone Hour," and "Kids!", the show is a loving satire of generational divides, celebrity obsession, and the dawn of rock culture. It is widely celebrated for its charm, humor, and as a popular staple of American musical theatre.
