About this Event

Description

“It’s the carbon economy, stupid!” Building housing like climate doesn’t matter will make the already dangerous climate-change risks even worse. We can build better, we can live better – for ourselves and for future generations. Let’s discuss mass timber construction scaled for Vermont communities that prioritizes gentle infill, not “economies of scale” carbon-heavy development that is value-engineered for a fairytale world of cost-free externalities that sacrifice health, community, and planet.

Professors: Jane Philbrick, climate entrepreneur and educator, and Andrew Ruff, Research Director at Gray Organschi Architecture and the Timber City Research Initiative
Jane Philbrick is a climate entrepreneur and educator working across public and private sectors in design, engineering, art, science, industry, agriculture, governance, and finance to decarbonize the physical economy at scale and at speed. She has exhibited, lectured, and taught internationally, was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies, MIT, and at MacDowell Colony. Jane's work and writing have been widely published, and she also serves on the UN International Council for Environmental Economics and Development.
Andy Ruff is the Research Director at Gray Organschi Architecture and the Timber City Research Initiative, where he focuses on developing a comprehensive approach for incorporating timber construction into cities. He previously held appointments at such institutions as Yale School of Architecture. Andy has lectured and published on the subject of mass timber buildings in the global carbon economy.
